On the evening of September 21st, 2018, six tornadoes touched down in the area of Dunrobin/Ottawa/Gatineau/Calabogie. Some injuries and widespread wind damage to buildings are reported throughout the area.

Quebec residents:Residents of Quebec should call 8-1-1 (819-966-0180) and choose option 2 for Info-Social for information.
The City of Ottawa updates its website with important information for affected citizens.

CLEANUP:
Residents looking for emergency clean-up assistance on private residential properties in the tornado/windstorm affected areas can contact Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Alliance Members of Ontario at 1-844-547-2663 for assistance at no charge to private residential property owners..

COMMUNITY SUPPORT CENTRES
The remaining community support information table is located at West Carelton Client Service Centre, 5670 Carp Rd, and is open from 8:30 am-5 pm.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

* Contact the Ottawa branch of the Red Cross for help with recovery efforts.
The Salvation Army will be supporting individuals and families affected with vouchers for their thrift store (exchangeable for clothing, furniture, household items). Call Salvation Army Family & Community Services at 613-241-1573 ext 268 for a needs assessment.

* Residents affected by tornado should first contact their insurance company

Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians: financial assistance in the aftermath of a natural disaster that causes costly, widespread damage to eligible private property. The program has been activated for Ottawa and the form is available at: http://www.mah.gov.on.ca/Page19878.aspx This can be used for food assistance, but applicant must apply through private insurance first and be within disaster activation area(s). See here for all application details. 500$ deductible that can be waived for low-income households. Low income cut off information available here

Property taxes for damaged structures: The City may cancel/reduce/refund part of property taxes levied on properties where to structure has been razed or damaged by Friday's tornadoes and windstorm. Submit application to City of Ottawa by February 28, 2019. Contact Revenue Services at 613-580-2444 for more information or visit the website.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

MAIL DELIVERY/CANADA POST
Residents and businesses in Ottawa displaced by the tornadoes are being offered free Mail Forwarding Service for up to 12 months by Canada Post. Where mail cannot be delivered, Canada Post has secured mail and parcels at one of their facilities and it is available for pick up. Bring valid government-issued photo identification to pick up mail.

Impacted residents in Dubrobin can pick up their mail at the mobile post office located at 3162 Dunrobin Rd Mon-Fri 1:30 pm-6:30 pm. This includes residents who used to retrieve their mail from postal boxes. Parcels will continue to be carded to nearby post offices in Kinburn, Carp or Fitzroy Harbour.

Scams : There have been reports of recovery programs misrepresenting themselves in tornado-affected areas. Please be vigilant of potential scams - speak directly with your insurance company with regards to authorized work.

* The United Way, City of Ottawa, Red Cross and others are working together in storm recovery efforts. Donate or learn more at Afterthestorm.ca
* The Ottawa Food Bank is currently accepting donations to purchase food for residents affected by the tornado.
* The Salvation Army is accepting donations of clothing, furniture and household items in anticipation of increased requests from residents affected by the windstorm and tornadoes. Call 1-800-725-2769 or locally at 613-233-8428 ext 0 for more information.
* The Canadian Red Cross is accepting financial donations by phone, 1-800-418-1111, or at local Red Cross offices.
